Matthys Gerber

Matthys Gerber

Since the 1980’s, Matthys Gerber’s work has explored the full gamut of painterly genres, skipping deftly between abstraction and representation, embracing contradiction, defying conventions and delighting in the rift between high and low art. Gerber’s practice has made its mark as a critical and exuberant exploration of the tools and techniques of painting, and of being an artist in Sydney, Australia.

Matthys Gerber’s significant career was the subject of a major solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, in 2015. Gerber has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally, including; Beijing International Art Biennale, China National Museum of Fine Arts, Beijing, China; I Want To Change The World, GAFA, Guangzhou, China; Forever Young: 30 years of the Heide Collection, Heide Park Museum, Melbourne; Yellow Pages, curated by John Armleder and 404 Team, Musee d’Arte et Contemporain, Geneva. His work is held in major public and private collections including: The Art Gallery of NSW, Sydney; The National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; The National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; The National Portrait Gallery, Canberra; The Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art , Brisbane, Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide, Newcastle Regional Art Gallery, Wollongong City Art Gallery, BHP Billition, Sydney; Allen Allen and Hemsley; News Limited.
